Cricket legend Shane Warne began his first day of play today representing 888 Poker in day one of the Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic tournament in Las Vegas.
Held at the famous Bellagio Casino from 14 to 19 December, the US$15,000 buy-in tournament is famous for attracting high rollers, big-name poker professionals and celebrities to compete for a total prize pool expected to be as high as US$10 million.
While the tournament epitomises poker sport, skill and glamour, Warne says it is the fun side of poker that draws him to it.
“Anyone can play. You can be the CEO of a company, a car salesman or a sportsman and you can sit around a table and play. That’s one of the fun things about poker, it’s a really accessible sport,” Warne said prior to the tournament.
“Vegas is pretty amazing. The Five Diamond is a massive tournament with the best players in the world, so I am really excited about it and I want to play well. If I could make the finals I would be more than happy.”
Spin king Warne has proven his all-round sporting expertise since making a seamless and successful transition from cricket to poker in recent years, partnering with 888 Poker, a brand under online entertainment expert group 888.com.
“I've been involved with 888 for a few years now, it’s been great fun,” Warne said.
“888 Poker has a great site and it is easy to work. It is great to be captain of 888’s poker team - I will try to fly the flag for 888, hopefully I will continue to do that well.”
Warne will also be representing 888 Poker at the internationally renowned and celebrity-studded Aussie Millions (Australian Poker Championship) held at Melbourne Crown Casino from 14 to 31 January 2010.
